Symbolism

SHIELD

The chevron rompu is a reference to John Glenns distinguished career as a Marine Corps pilot, astronaut and Senator. Red, black and gold are the colors associated with the United States Marine Corps. John Glenns training with the Corps and subsequent combat missions during World War II and the Korean War prepared him for the rigorous mental and physical tests of becoming an astronaut. The scattering of 20 stars represents the date--February 20, 1962--when Colonel Glenn flew the Friendship 7 mission and became the first American to orbit the earth and only the fifth person to fly in space. The fasces denote his career as a United States Senator. Beneath the shield are three of John Glenns major awards: the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.

CREST

The globe with three red bands celebrates John Glenns achievement of orbiting the earth three times during a flight lasting four hours and 55 minutes. The USNS JOHN GLENN (MLP 2) is named in honor of his achievements in space, as a veteran and as a United States Senator.

MOTTO

John Glenns life and career are represented in the motto, INSPIRATION HONOR DEDICATION.

Two U.S. Marine Corps Officer mamelukes depict John Glenns service during World War II and the Korean War.
